Switchboard Upgrades in Cairns

Safer power, better protection, room to grow.

G'day, I'm Lachlan. I replace old switchboards across Cairns with new switchboards and RCBOs (a safety switch and circuit breaker in one), so your home is better protected and ready for things like solar, air conditioning or an EV charger. I'm based in Mount Sheridan and work right across Cairns.

  • ✓Replace old ceramic fuses
Old rewireable fuses swapped for new RCBOs.
  • ✓Room for new circuits
Space and capacity planned in for solar, air conditioning or an EV charger.

Why it matters

Why Upgrade Your Switchboard?

Your switchboard is the heart of your home's electrical system. Some older homes still have boards with rewireable ceramic fuses and few or no safety switches — they were built for a time before air conditioners, induction cooktops, solar and EV chargers.

Safety switches (RCDs) shut off the power in a fraction of a second if they detect current leaking to earth, helping protect people from serious electric shock. Circuit breakers do a different job: they protect the wiring and appliances. An RCBO does both jobs in one device on each circuit, so a fault only trips that circuit instead of the whole house, and it's simply switched back on rather than rewiring a fuse. In Queensland, safety switch (RCD) protection is required on power point circuits when a home is sold or rented out, and the Electrical Safety Office recommends it on all circuits. I fit that protection as RCBOs.

Adding solar, a new aircon or an EV charger can mean extra circuits, isolators or protection devices. A switchboard upgrade isn't needed in every case, but sometimes an older board doesn't have the room for them. I'll check yours and give you a straight answer.

Warning signs

Signs You Might Need An Upgrade

Old ceramic fuses

An older style of protection that has to be rewired when it blows.

Few or no safety switches

Not every circuit has safety switch (RCD) protection.

Frequent tripping

Breakers or safety switches going off regularly are worth getting checked.

Heat, buzzing or scorch marks

A warning sign — call an electrician straight away.

No room for new circuits

Planning solar, aircon or an EV charger.

Renovating

A good time to bring your board up to date.

FAQ

Common Questions

How do I know if I need a switchboard upgrade?

Common signs include old ceramic fuses, no safety switch protection or not every circuit protected, frequent tripping, scorch marks, buzzing or a burning smell, or no room for new circuits. If you notice burning smells or scorch marks, call a licensed electrician straight away.

What is an RCBO?

An RCBO is a safety switch (RCD) and circuit breaker in one. The safety switch part shuts off the power in a fraction of a second if it detects current leaking to earth, helping protect people from electric shock; the circuit breaker part protects the wiring and appliances. I fit one on each circuit, so a fault only trips that circuit instead of the whole house. Safety switches have a "T" or "Test" button, and the Electrical Safety Office recommends pressing it every three months.

Can I add solar, aircon or an EV charger to my existing board?

Sometimes. An upgrade isn't always required, but new systems can need their own isolators and extra protection (I use RCBOs), and an older board may not have room. I'll check yours and let you know.

Will I be without power during the upgrade?

Yes, the power needs to be off while the board is changed over. I'll let you know what to expect beforehand and keep it as short as possible.

Do I need safety switches if I'm selling or renting out my home?

Yes. In Queensland, a landlord must have approved safety switch (RCD) protection on all power point circuits within 90 days after a tenancy starts. Sellers must declare whether one is installed, and a buyer must install one on the power point circuits within 90 days of the property transfer if there isn't one. I fit this protection as RCBOs.

Do you do switchboard upgrades for businesses?

Yes — I do residential and commercial work. Get in touch with the details and I'll let you know how I can help.
