Hard-wired 240V or a non-removable 10-year battery. If your existing alarms are 240V, the replacements must be 240V too. - ✓Testing and a quick walkthrough

Quality brands I install: I typically fit Red Smoke Alarms or Clipsal photoelectric smoke alarms. They're interconnected, hard-wired or with a sealed 10-year lithium battery, and certified to Australian Standard AS 3786.
Queensland Law Is Changing On 1 January 2027
Queensland's smoke alarm laws have been rolling out in stages since 1 January 2017. From 1 January 2027, all Queensland homes — houses, townhouses and units — must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms.
If you're selling or renting a home, these requirements already apply (they've been in force since 1 January 2022). New builds and substantially renovated homes have needed them since 2017.
Under the legislation, alarms must be photoelectric (AS 3786-2014), contain no ionisation sensor, be less than 10 years past their manufacture date, work when tested, and be interconnected with every other required alarm. They must be hard-wired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery, and go on each storey: in each bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and in the path of travel out of the home on a storey with no bedrooms.
More importantly, interconnected alarms give everyone in the house an early warning, no matter which room a fire starts in. That extra time to get out is what this is all about.

Common Questions
When do all Queensland homes need compliant smoke alarms?
By 1 January 2027, all Queensland homes must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms. If you sell or rent out a home, the requirements already apply.
Where do the smoke alarms need to go?
On each storey: in each bedroom, and in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home (or, with no hallway, between the bedrooms and the rest of the storey). If a storey has no bedrooms, at least one alarm goes in the most likely path of travel to exit the home.
Can I keep my old smoke alarms?
Not if they're ionisation alarms, more than 10 years past their manufacture date, not working, or not interconnected. I'll check what you have and let you know.
Do the alarms have to be hard-wired?
They must be hard-wired 240V or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery. If your home already has 240V alarms, they must be replaced with 240V alarms; new homes and major renovations need hard-wired alarms. Otherwise, 10-year battery alarms are an option.
I'm a landlord — what do I need?
Rental properties already need interconnected photoelectric alarms that meet the legislation, and the landlord is responsible for installing them. Landlords must also test each alarm within 30 days before a tenancy starts. I can upgrade your rental and test everything.
